Description
The Lock, Wood and Rock bench is an architectural statement that celebrates the raw power and unexpected harmony found in nature’s most diverse elements. This installation is characterized by its central beam of Charred Kalimaruthu wood, a timber chosen for its extreme density and durability. The wood undergoes a specialized charring process that not only creates a sophisticated, midnight-black finish but also forms a protective layer, rendering the piece resilient against time and the elements.
This wooden monolith is supported by two meticulously carved Coquina rock legs. The legs are designed with a rhythmic, layered texture that mimics the sedimentary deposits of the ocean floor from which the rock is born. The ingenuity of the piece lies in its interlocking design; the wooden block is “locked” into the stone supports, demonstrating a balance between the organic warmth of the timber and the silent, stony strength of the Coquina.
Standing at a commanding 65 inches in height (166 cms), this bench transcends conventional seating to become a focal point of any curated garden or minimalist interior. It offers a unique viewer experience, where the tactile contrast of the rough, fossilized stone against the smooth, carbonized wood creates a sensory connection to the earth’s geological and botanical history.
